Dive into the world of details lens first with Helen Grose and Andrew McLachlan for a
Macro Bootcamp
Photographic Workshop

Join the two photographers at Helen’s property in Muskoka on Saturday August 20, 2022 as they share their love of nature and knowledge of capturing it up close and personal. This workshop will run from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost of this event is $275 plus HST.
The day will begin inside Helen’s large art gallery with a short presentation to discuss techniques and ideas.

This workshop will provide you with an incredible opportunity to photograph a variety of subjects both inside and outside to increase your skills in controlled and unpredictable environments.
Inside, photograph Andrew’s special collection of exotic preserved insects – creatures you may otherwise never see on natural substrates. Get creative with white and black backgrounds, and practice your focus stacking techniques to maximize depth of field in macro imagery. These insects range in size and colour – from half an inch to 5 inches, from brilliant and bizarre, to true masters of camouflage.

Outside, explore the cultivated gardens full of colourful flowers and textures, wander into the fields to see what macro life awaits among the wildflowers and grasses, or try to capture the damselflies, frogs and other pond life. Avid birders may wish to pop a telephoto lens in their bags, as Helen’s property is home to a number of grassland species.
The maximum number of participants for this event is 8 to allow everyone the space to spread out, as well as the opportunity to ask questions, practice, and learn.
The recommended gear for this event is a macro lens of any focal length, although close focusing zoom lenses will also work, especially for the larger insects. If you are unsure, please reach out to discuss options. Since the indoor subjects are static, we recommend a tripod and ambient light. For photographing live subjects in the field, the use of flash can be beneficial. Andrew will have a good selection of his macro gear on-hand that folks can borrow during the workshop.
To register for this event, please contact Andrew or Helen by email with your first and last name. Payment is due in full upon registration, and can be made by email transfer or by cheque made payable to Andrew McLachlan. Registered participants will receive an email with additional information, including directions to Helen’s gallery (located between Bracebridge and Port Carling), approximately one week prior to the workshop.
This event is a rain or shine workshop. We recommend dressing appropriately, including layers for cool to hot weather, as well as rain gear for both you and your equipment.
Cancellation Policy: Please be sure to check your schedule before registering, as there are no refunds.
